Solve Your Problems with Fillers
Functional Fillers Selection Based on Technical Problem
All too often books and websites tell you a lot about the fillers but they fail to explain how fillers can solve your problems. In the real world, that’s why people use fillers to such a great extent. Customers rarely ask for mineral properties, it’s much more common that they say “I need to increase HDT, what’s the best filler to try?”, or “I need to increase stiffness while preserving impact resistance”, or “I need piano black in a filled system”. This section is dedicated to explaining which filler to choose depending on your needs.
How to Select the Right Filler…
First, we need to identify which filler property is needed and then, based on that, select the fillers that are best suited to deliver that property, or combination of properties. For example, if we want to make a thermally conductive compound, then we would look at the data and select a mineral with higher thermal conductivity. Similarly, if we want to improve barrier properties in packaging, then we would look for platy fillers with high aspect ratio, for example talc, mica nor nanoclay.
As well as looking at the primary property, we need to take other factors into account such as price, safety abrasion and so on. Will will look at those as well so that an overall solid recommendation can be made. Note that Phantom Fillers does not sell fillers, so this advice is unbiased. It can be hard to get unbiased advice from mineral manufacturers because they have a vested interest in promoting their own products.
